Exro has developed and patented a unique method of “self-optimizing” electric motors and generators to reduce losses in high variability applications. Our first commercial application is wind power, where we are collaborating with numerous turbine makers to convert their existing geared turbines to direct-drive using our Variable Input Electrical Generator (VIEG).
The benefit is an immediate increase in the turbine’s annual output along with a significant reduction in downtime and annual maintenance. In addition to wind power, our technology platform has a compelling value proposition for run of river and marine power, as well as electric vehicles, industrial motors, portable power and other inherently variable applications where reducing losses equates to a material economic benefit.
Exro defines the Portable GenSet market as gas and diesel powered generators under 100 kW (such as those that power marinas, cottages, etc.). Portable power plants are used in construction sites, on ships, and as back-up commercial power. Because traditional electrical generators require a fixed rotation speed (typically 1800 rpm in genset applications), they require the gas or diesel motor to run at high rpm at all times, irrespective of the actual load. The VIEG on the other hand is able to adjust its output capacity to match load in real time, and this has the potential to deliver a material fuel savings in both the portable genset and portable power plant markets.
Generators currently only have limited ability to control their amount of power. If the user only needs 20% of that power, the rest of the power produced is wasted, an excessive amount of fuel is consumed, and emissions are produced in the process. Exro’s VIEG technology provides generator manufacturers with the ability to differentiate their companies by providing consumers with a generator that consumes less fuel (ongoing cost reduction) and produces fewer emissions than other generators. Our technology platform gives generators an ability they have never had before; to only produce the amount of energy needed at a given time. In doing so, only the amount of fuel required is burned and emissions are reduced. For consumers this offers reduced fuel consumption and the opportunity to reduce one’s personal carbon footprint.
