Exro has developed and patented a unique method of “self-optimizing” electric motors and generators to reduce losses in high variability applications. Our first commercial application is wind power, where we are collaborating with numerous turbine makers to convert their existing geared turbines to direct-drive using our Variable Input Electrical Generator (VIEG).
The benefit is an immediate increase in the turbine’s annual output along with a significant reduction in downtime and annual maintenance. In addition to wind power, our technology platform has a compelling value proposition for run of river and marine power, as well as electric vehicles, industrial motors, portable power and other inherently variable applications where reducing losses equates to a material economic benefit.
Jonathan Ritchey is a serial inventor and visionary committed to the environment. It was this passion that led him to experiment with many innovative technologies over the past 20 years resulting in more than a dozen patents. His most recent invention the Variable Input Electrical Generator, or VIEG, led to the founding of Exro technologies.
A career driven by his particular interests began in food technology and production before shifting to the investment industry. It was his role in developing the Earth Ship Geodome design, a self-sustaining, off-grid home, that allowed his interest in clean technology to prosper.
From 1992 to 2008 Jonathan tackled the complexities of water purification for human consumption. These efforts led to the development of the WaterMill™ and the founding of Element Four. As CTO, Jonathan has worked to perfect technologies that extract high quality potable water from atmospheric air for residential and commercial applications. To increase clean drinking water in developing nations, Jonathan also founded the non-profit Freedom Water International.
As a result of the planet’s pressing need for clean energy, Jonathan has turned his attention to the critical, but highly inefficient role generators play in the renewable energy industry. Jonathan formulated the concept of a variable input generator for over a decade before founding Exro technologies in 2005 to accelerate the development of the VIEG for the global market.
Jonathan became a food technologist at Kansas State (AIB International) and business management at SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary. Jonathan has earned a Certified Financial Planner designation, a Canadian Mutual Fund license and a Level 2 Life Agent license. In 2006, the Okanagan region of British Columbia honored Jonathan with its Science and Technology Council Innovator of the Year award.
